Summarised from the U.S. Department of State photo guidance and, for green card photos, the USCIS Form I-485 instructions. Always check the latest official rules for your application.
Lay your baby on their back on a plain white or off-white sheet, or cover a car seat with the sheet and sit your baby in it. Take the photo from straight above in good daylight, and make sure there are no shadows on your baby's face.
The State Department says it is okay if a baby's eyes are not entirely open. All other children must have their eyes open. The official wording is "not entirely open", so try for a moment when the eyes are at least partly open.
No other person can be in the photo, and nothing may block your baby's face: no hands, pacifier or toys. Lay your baby down or use a car seat covered with a white sheet instead.
The official rules don't name a color. Everyday clothes are fine. Hats and head coverings must come off unless they are worn for religious or medical reasons. We suggest a color other than white, so it stands out from the sheet.
No. The U.S. Department of State says not to change your photo with software, apps, filters or artificial intelligence. We only check your photo and crop it to the official size. We never smooth skin, change the background or alter your face.
No. Your photo is checked and prepared on your own phone or computer. It is never uploaded to our servers.
Download the 4×6 print sheet and order it as a normal 4×6 photo print (choose "actual size"). Each sheet has two 2×2 inch photos to cut out. The State Department asks for matte or glossy photo paper.
